The Opportunity
Following the retirement of its longtime security leader after nearly two decades, the NFLPA partnered with Prodigy Search to recruit its next Head of Security. More than a traditional replacement, the organization viewed the search as an opportunity to modernize its security function and elevate the role into a strategic leadership position supporting players, staff, and operations across an increasingly complex risk environment. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, the Head of Security would oversee physical security strategy, executive protection, event security, crisis management, and threat assessment while serving as a key liaison with law enforcement agencies, NFL clubs, and league leadership. The role also supported security planning for major events, including the Super Bowl, and the NFLPA’s growing international initiatives. The ideal candidate needed a rare combination of security expertise, sports industry awareness, strong law enforcement relationships—particularly in the Washington, D.C. market—and the executive presence to advise senior leadership on sensitive risk matters.

The Prodigy Approach
Drawing on its experience recruiting senior security leaders across professional sports and live entertainment, including placements with the MLBPA, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, and Crypto.com Arena, Prodigy Search partnered closely with NFLPA leadership to develop a targeted search strategy. Rather than limiting the candidate pool to traditional corporate security executives, Prodigy evaluated leaders from federal law enforcement, government agencies, professional sports, executive protection, and enterprise risk management. The search focused on candidates with experience leading complex investigations, advising executives, coordinating across multiple agencies, and operating in highly visible, stakeholder-driven environments. A particular emphasis was placed on candidates with strong Washington, D.C.-area law enforcement networks, as well as the ability to support international initiatives and highprofile event operations. Through a proactive outreach strategy targeting passive executive talent, Prodigy identified candidates with the unique blend of leadership, investigative, and risk-management expertise required for the role. The successful candidate—who was not actively pursuing a new opportunity—was included in Prodigy’s initial recommended slate just 16 days after launch.

The Outcome
Prodigy Search successfully recruited a Head of Security with the leadership, credibility, and strategic perspective needed to guide the NFLPA through its next phase of growth and risk management. The hire strengthened the organization’s ability to enhance physical security, improve threat assessment and crisis preparedness, support player and executive safety, and advise senior leadership on emerging risks.
