Wide-Ranging Success

500 Festival
President & Chief Executive Officer

The Opportunity
Following the retirement of President & CEO Bob Bryant, the 500 Festival initiated a significant leadership transition after more than a decade of organizational stability and growth. Replacing an executive so closely tied to the organization’s identity, civic presence, and operational success required both sensitivity and strategic rigor. The 500 Festival operates within a complex structure - two boards, more than 30 directors per entity, 18–20 full-time staff, and over 2,000 volunteers - producing nationally recognized events throughout the month of May in celebration of the Indianapolis 500. The incoming leader would oversee large-scale event production, fundraising, sponsorship, and community engagement, while serving as the public face of one of Indiana’s most visible civic institutions. The Board sought an executive capable of balancing servant leadership with strategic growth, preserving the Festival’s legacy while modernizing revenue strategies, strengthening partnerships, and maintaining trusted stakeholder relationships. This was not simply a replacement hire, but a strategic transition requiring alignment across a diverse Board and Search Committee, many of whom had worked alongside prior leadership for years.

The Prodigy Approach
Prodigy Search partnered closely with the Search Committee and Board leadership to design and execute a structured, transparent search tailored to a nonprofit governance environment. Through in-depth discovery sessions with board members, foundation leadership, and senior staff, the team defined success metrics beyond the job description, clarifying leadership competencies, cultural attributes, and strategic priorities before entering the market. A targeted national search was supported by comprehensive market mapping across sports, live events, civic organizations, and the nonprofit sector. Throughout the process, Prodigy provided strategic advisory support, including candidate calibration, structured evaluation frameworks, compensation benchmarking, and stakeholder alignment, ensuring a disciplined, equitable, and mission-driven approach.

The Outcome
Following a competitive national search, the 500 Festival successfully appointed a new President & Chief Executive Officer, completing a critical leadership transition after more than a decade of organizational stability. The search delivered a leader capable of balancing strategic growth with strong stakeholder alignment, bringing experience across event operations, revenue generation, and community engagement, aligned with the organization’s mission. Within a highly visible civic organization and complex governance structure, the process ensured alignment across board leadership, the search committee, and key stakeholders, resulting in a seamless transition. The appointment positions the 500 Festival to continue driving innovation, expand partnerships, and sustain its community impact while strengthening its role as one of the nation’s premier civic celebrations tied to the Indianapolis 500.
